Heidrek was released, and at once he made ready to return home. Then the queen said, “Lord, do not let Heidrek go away like this, without an end to this quarrelling. That will not benefit your domain. Instead offer him gold or silver.” The king did so, and had much money carried to King Heidrek, and said he would give it to him and keep his friendship. Heidrek said: “I do not lack treasure.” The King of Gardar told the queen. She said, “Offer him lands and goods, and many followers.” The king did so. King Heidrek said: “I have many goods and men.” The king of Gardar told his queen this. She said, “Offer him that which he will accept, but that’s your daughter.” The king said: “I did not think that it would come to this, but you shall prevail.” Then the king of Gardar went to King Heidrek and said, “Rather than we part in anger, I would like you to take my daughter with as much honour as you choose yourself.” Heidrek accepted this offer blithely, and the King of Gardar’s daughter went home with him. Now King Heidrek returned, and then wanted to get rid of Sifka and took his best horse, and it was late in the evening. Now they come to a river. Then she became too heavy for the horse, so that it then collapsed, and the king went on his way. He had to carry her across the river. Then there was nothing else for it, but he threw her off his shoulders and broke her backbone, and left her corpse drifting away down the river. King Heidrek held a great feast and married the daughter of the king of Gardar. Their daughter was named Hervor. She was a shieldmaiden and was brought up in England with Earl Frodmar.
